We have on Dr. Jim Kovach and Dr. Jaime Garza, also both NFL alumni, for this episode who are incredibly passionate about research, orthobiologics and cellular mediated therapies. It’s a perfect dovetail episode after our Dr. Scott Bruder episode on the FDA Consumer alert on orthobiologics. We discuss further what you can/can’t do in orthobiologics and discuss an innovation in pre-market approval.

Jim Kovach is MD, JD, Executive Director, Translational Entrepreneurship, UC Davis School of Medicine, where he supports physician training in entrepreneurship; and industry outreach to support translational science. He identifies products that are consistent in formulation and can developed, scaled and distributed to help solve challenges in medicine. Dr. Kovach received his medical degree with distinction from the University of Kentucky while simultaneously playing in the National Football League. Dr. Kovach played 7 years in the National Football League as a middle linebacker for the New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers.

Dr. Jaime R. Garza M.D., D.D.S., F.A.C.S. is a native San Antonian with a focus on academics and clinical trials. He has academic appointments as a professor at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center and at Tulane School of Medicine. He is also the President of the Texas Center for Cell Therapy and Research, LLC. A former college football player before entering medical school, Dr. Garza has served as team or tournament physician for several college and professional teams including the NFL’s New Orleans Saints and the and U.S. Olympic track and field team.

Topics include:

-We hear about their involvement in pivotal investigational device exemption (IDE) studies with GID BIO, Inc.. An IDE allows an investigational device to be used in a clinical study to obtain pre-market approval (PME) for class III medical devices. The first study was a safety and feasibility study with the second being a double blind placebo controlled trial at three sites. Tune-in to hear about the technology and the goals of the study outcomes.

-Both are college football and NFL alumni with a passion to educate former players and facilitate outreach to industry. A decade ago, Dr. Garza received emails from NFL alumni about “great stem cell treatments available for free,” yet it wasn’t legitimate.  He has since educated alumni and physicians on how they were being targeted and how to protect the NFL Alumni name. It was a significant organizational wake-up call and is now headed in the right direction with the establishment of NFL Alumni Healthcare Committee, for which Dr. Kovach and Dr. Garza serve as senior medical advisors.

Martha Shadan, President and CEO of Miach Orthopaedics, Inc., joins us for this episode. She has more than three decades of experience in the life science industry as a business leader in a variety of both large and start-up organizations.

We hear about her industry experience as a leader. During 2018, Shadan served as global vice president of marketing at Smith & Nephew, a role she assumed after the company acquired Rotation Medical, where she was president and CEO. Shadan led Rotation Medical through FDA approval and commercialization of the Rotation Medical Bioinductive Implant for rotator cuff tears (now known as REGENETEN™), as well as the company’s acquisition by Smith & Nephew in December 2017. Prior to joining Rotation Medical, she was the president of the Trauma Division at Zimmer where she managed the P&L for the global business. Shadan served at Covidien as vice president/general manager of Vascular Therapies and vice president/general manager of BioSurgery and Sports Surgery.

Topics include:

-Miach Orthopaedics’ proprietary, bio-engineered Bridge-Enhanced® ACL Restoration (BEAR®) Implant. They recently received FDA clearance and are moving towards commercialization in select areas shortly. It is a proprietary bio-engineered implant used to facilitate healing of the torn ACL. Unlike reconstruction, which is the current standard of care, the BEAR Implant does not require a second surgical wound site to remove a healthy tendon from another part of the leg or using a deceased donor’s tendon. The BEAR Implant acts as a bridge between the two ends of the torn ACL.

-We also discuss important advice for medical device listeners in their careers.

Such a remarkable, entrepreneurial story! Joanna Geisinger Devin has worked in medical device sales for almost 10 years for companies such as Smith & Nephew and Zimmer. Early in her career, she realized the poor communication endemic in surgical scheduling, a problem she faced firsthand as a sales rep. In 2016, she left her position as a medical sales rep to receive her MBA at Babson College F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business. She is now the Co-Founder and CEO of Torq Interface with its mission to revolutionize communication between hospitals and their vendors and to repurpose savings for enhanced patient care.

Topics include:

-Get creative to reach out to surgeons! Joanna had caricatures drawn of surgeons with music to get their attention. She personalized it to her surgeon’s to end the dread of being turned away at the front door.

-She left a fantastic position in medical sales to get her MBA and pursue her desire to be an entrepreneur. Listen to this amazing story!

-Torq Interface is like air traffic control for surgical cases. They are now in over 100 facilities and 24 states using Torq’s EHR-integrated platform to streamline surgical scheduling and eliminate back-and-forth emails, calls, and texts. They also have a simplified loaner tray management feature to gain visibility into the status of loaned equipment and track vendor compliance with pick-up and drop-off windows.

-Her vision with Torq with growing into ambulatory surgery centers to promote efficiencies and goal of 500 facilities in next 12 months.

Thinking about innovating a product in medical device? This is an episode for you. We are joined this episode by Dr. Steven Goldberg, orthopedic surgeon in private practice in Naples, FL. Dr. Goldberg moved to Naples in 2005 as an Orthopedic Surgeon for the Cleveland Clinic, and later served for 5 years as the Chief of Orthopedic Surgery at Physicians Regional Healthcare System. In 2014 Dr. Goldberg founded Catalyst OrthoScience, a medical device company focused on developing less-invasive surgical implants for orthopedic surgeons to help reduce recovery time and improve outcomes for patients. He holds 10 patents for those innovations, and the devices and tools are used daily by surgeons across the United States.

Topics include:

-The process of founding Catalyst OrthoScience with high highs and low lows getting the first products launched. He started making prototypes in his kitchen to get it off-the-ground. We hear about the long, expensive and arduous journey to get approval and product in the market.

-He provides advice for physicians that have new product ideas. Use your network and don’t be afraid to talk to your peers about it. Don’t show up to pitch with a napkin drawing and do the extra work to produce prototypes for pitching.
